Just like everything else from the 1970s and 1980s ... SMURFS ARE BACK!!!

Well, they never really went away since they have been being made and sold overseas, they were just difficult and expensive to get here, and only really available via TradeMe auctions or overseas webstores.

Smurf figurines did briefly make a quiet re-appearance in The Warehouse and ToyWorld branches a couple of years ago, but then disappeared again.

There are now small quantities of Smurfs packs available in some Farmers branches (a Smurf figurine and an accessory). So far I've only seen a Papa Smurf, Handy Smurf and a couple of Smurfette packs, (as well as one Papa Smurf pack labelled as Smurfette). They are a bit expensive though.

The live-action / computer animation film is still in the process of being made.

Best of all, last night I did a survey for BP, part of which was the possibility of them doing a new Smurf promotion. Just like they originally did years ago, you may soon be able to buy a Smurf figurine whenever you buy petrol at a BP station (the price descibed in the survey was around $2 to $4 each and possibly up to 20 figurines to collect - one per week).

:luck:

The BP promotion is only a possibility at this stage (probably the one many people would prefer) for next year, but when the movie is released the toys will show up in the toy shops again.

BP had two other options in the survey - one was some nosy twit examining your car for "safety" (probably on the forecourt, so slowing down people!) and telling you for free anything that was wrong, e.g. light bulbs not working, etc. The other option was some sort of extremely boring voucher / points system for then being able to buy homewares stuff like wine glasses, cutlery, etc., but the choice of thing you could buy was very limited.

What you really want is the old Astronaut Smurf ... people were spending BIG money buying that figure (with an intact bubble helmet - most of them broke) many years ago, so by now it must be commanding huge piles of money. I do have one, but the bubble did break and was glued back together.

According to Flicks.co.nz, Doogie Howser has been cast in the Smurfs movie ...

Quote

Doogie Howser Joins The Smurfs
Neil Patrick Harris (idolised in the early nineties for his role as 'Doogie Howser, M.D.') is the on-the-rise-again star thanks to the success of TV's How I Met Your Mother and his cameos (as himself) in the Harold & Kumar movies.</p>

According to Deadline Hollywood, he's just signed on to play the lead human character in the live action / CGI adaptation of the Smurfs cartoon.

The Smurfs movie is being directed by Raja Gosnell (Scooby Doo, Beverly Hills Chihuahua) and starts shooting in April.

The lead human character?! Gargamel?

When is the movie???

Good question.

Originally it was planned to be released about three years ago as a fully computer-animated movie to be released around the same time as the 50th Anniversary celebrations in 2008.

Since then it has been delayed, changed writers and directors, etc. numerous times. It is now a live-action / computer-animated mix, and is currently planned for release (in America) on 29 July, 2011.

There's not much information at the moment, but you can keep an eye on ComingSoon.net's The Smurfs movie page.

Winters, Lopez, Perry and Cumming Join The Smurfs

Jonathan Winters, George Lopez, Katy Perry and Alan Cumming are joining Neil Patrick Harris in Sony's live-action/animated The Smurfs.

Winters, who voiced multiple characters on the long-running Hanna-Barbera cartoon version of "Smurfs," will play Papa Smurf. Perry is in talks to portray Smurfette, Alan Cumming is taking on Gutsy Smurf and George Lopez is onboard as Grouchy Smurf.

Harris will play the lead live-action character.

Raja Gosnell is directing the Columbia Pictures/Sony Pictures Animation film from a screenplay by David N. Weiss & J. David Stem and Jay Sherick & David Ronn.

Nope, I have no idea who "Gutsy Smurf" is either (Hefty Smurf??) ... no doubt the first pointer to this being just another in Hollyweird's growing line of unrecognisable trash "resurrecting the past" movies.

Hank Azaria is Gargamel in The Smurfs
Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Hank Azaria ("The Simpsons") will voice evil sorcerer Gargamel in Sony's The Smurfs.

The magazine also says that Jayma Mays ("Glee") will play the pregnant wife to Neil Patrick Harris' character. The film centers on the happy expectant couple's lives being turned upside-down upon meeting these blue creatures. The movie will take place in New York City's Central Park and is set to begin production next month.

Jonathan Winters, who voiced multiple characters on the long-running Hanna-Barbera cartoon version of "Smurfs," will play Papa Smurf. Katy Perry will portray Smurfette, Alan Cumming is taking on Gutsy Smurf and George Lopez is onboard as Grouchy Smurf.

The studio is targeting a August 3, 2011 release.

It's starting to look like a very bad idea. Doogie Howser is playing some new character (which sounds badly like it's been stolen from Stewart Little or 102 Dalmations), and there's still that silly "Gutsy Smurf" in there ... not to mention that the Smurfs now live in modern day New York's Central Park. :)

UPDATE: Neil Patrick Harris confirmed on Twitter that Gargamel won't be animated, the character will be live action. "Hank Azaria will be PLAYING Gargamel for the Smurfs film, not just providing a voice. He'll be live action. Perfect casting, can't wait!"
