Just been outside looking at my swan plants and counted 7 tiny wee caterpiller's, have been waiting and waiting for ever for them to appear, thought it would never happen!

anyways there are still more eggs there to hatch :joke:

Then i heard Thunder and peeked around the side of the house to see huge big black clouds comming my way! :king:

Hoping the babies don't get washed off the plant, wish i had an umbrella to put over them! :joke:

I just love watching them grow, then go into their Crysalis then emerge as Monarch butterflies! amazing :king:

I had a huge plant that was blown over in the wind several years ago. Just got around to replacing it and the new one is really taking off. Hope the butterflies don't find it till it's a bit bigger though cos it's probably not big enough to sustain too many caterpillars yet. :joke:

You might want to consider putting light netting over it and peg it up. Why? Coz wasps come along and eat the catepillers or chrysalis.

we have 5 big fat catapillas on our wee plant this year, we love keeping a eye on them growing too. Might get another few plants and grow them like you have the Mother, ready for next year.

The netting might be a good idea to stop the butterflies laying eggs on my plant till it's a bit bigger. You'd have to keep an eye out for any hatching butterflies or they'd get trapped. :joke:

Am going to detatch the Crysalis and give to friends who have small kids, so they can watch them hatch out and fly away! :joke: :king: :king:

I came home from the hairdressers yesterday to see a monarch hovering around the swan plant. I told her it was too small yet for her babies to grow but this morning when I looked there were quite a few eggs on it. No doubt they will strip it bare.

That's good! It's neat watching them, isn't it. I've got lots of wee caterpillars about 1 cm long... almost big enough to see without my glasses on! I'm taking photos of their progress with my new camera. Hopefully I'll catch the various stages of going into cocoons and hatching out. :luck:

We had the caterpillers strip our tree last year and all the crsyalises ended up on the ground as their leaves got eaten. My wife found a branch and stood it up in a bucket with rocks to stop it toppling. Then she spent time hot glueing the suckers onto the twigs by their black stalks! I told her she was crazy but away she went and then the kids took the branch to creche. They loved watching them all hatch over the following weeks.

It is definately worth doing as they get to hatch whereas on the ground they will die. Just be careful with the hot glue gun as it is fiddly to do and my wife burnt her fingers often! :luck: :)
